What was the project about?

Ukrainian-Jewish Encounter (Ontario, Canada) is a multinational initiative that started in 2008 as a collaborative project involving Ukrainians of Jewish and Christian heritages, in Ukraine and Israel as well as in the diasporas. Its work engages scholars, civic leaders, artists, governments and the broader public in an effort to promote stronger and deeper relations between the two peoples.

What was my role?
As a researcher based in NYC, I made use of the multiple archives of Jewish history to offer creative approach to narrate the history of the Ukrainian-Jewish cultural exchange through the centuries. I compiled and assessed some 4,000 digital visual materials, including photographs, maps, title pages of books, book illustrations, and ephemera, for the Virtual Tours of Ukrainian cities and shtetls, as well as for other content-related needs. I gathered images and wrote content for three PPT presentations covering the subjects of Ukrainian-Jewish literary, musical, and theatre interaction. I created separate digital collections on the subjects of Jewish and Ukrainian children’s literature, dissident movement in Ukraine in the 1960s-1970s, and started working on putting together a presentation on Jewish artists’ work in Ukraine.

During this project, I collaborated with a number of renowned scholars of Jewish and Ukrainian history; extracted relevant historical information to write narratives for website and traveling exhibition on Ukrainian-Jewish relations through history; resolved editorial and copyright issues.
